In Praise of The CW’s Femme Fatales

On the flipside, there’s TSC‘s brunette Phoebe Tonkin, who has managed to make us lovelovelove her Faye, the bitchtastic sexbomb with a purr like spiked honey and a thing for dark magic. Imagine an early Blair Waldorf in a Wicca wonderland and hot leather jackets. Not only does this one look like trouble, she is trouble, and while Faye is totally the anti-Caroline, we’re as enchanted by Tonkin’s ability to bring the mean-girl nastiness as we are by the lost-girl loneliness simmering beneath those perfectly arched eyebrows. Of course, Faye may not be so lonely after last night’s steamy mashup with Jake the Ken-Doll witch hunter, but you can bet your best cauldron that there’s gonna be a lot of nastiness to come once “creepy little Stepford ghoul” Cassie and company find out. TSC: Phoebe and Shelley talk ‘Fayana’ phenomenon: What’s to come?

What we didn’t expect was the rise of “Fayana” fans — those viewers rooting for bad girl Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) and her voice-of-reason frenemy Diana (Shelley Hennig) to get together. The enthusiasm of these fans hasn’t gone unnoticed — Phoebe, Shelley, and even executive producer Andrew Miller have had a blast watching fan videos and reading tweets.

This week, Zap2it visited the cast in Vancouver, where the show is filmed. Even though it was her day off, Shelley met us for coffee before heading to her dance lessons. Of course, we had to ask her about the Fayana fans and the impact they’ve had.

“I don’t know where this began. I mean, it obviously started on Twitter, where all of a sudden they ‘shipped’ our names,” she says. She and Phoebe have had fun playing up the ‘Fayana’ for the fans.

“Phoebe and I hang out a lot in real life. When we have the same days off, we work out together or go to Whole Foods together, or have a sleepover the night before we get on a flight to LA,” she explains. “So we’d Twitter a picture of us doing our thing, and people caught on, because our characters hate each other but we’re really good friends in real life, and I think the fans dig that. So they’ve ‘shipped’ us, and now we continue to ‘ship’ ourselves.”

“I call Shelley ‘Fayana’ now,” Phoebe told us later when we met up with her on set. “When we’re together, we’re like ‘Fayana’s day out!’”

‘TSC’ so far: What we love (and what we’d love to change)

What we love:

6. Speaking of sizzle… Faye is flawless. We don’t even care about her accent anymore. Somehow, Phoebe Tonkin takes even mundane stories (we’re not entirely sure what happened with the witch-drugs last week) and elevates them with her particular brand of sass. We particularly love the way Faye turns up the Mean Girl factor to 11 when necessary — and drops it just as quickly as soon as anyone calls her out. She’s able to suss out exactly how far people will allow her to push them — and then she pushes them just a little extra. It doesn’t hurt that she’s got powerful chemistry with every. single. person. Which brings us to…

Grey Damon Gushes About TSC Costar Phoebe Tonkin: “She’s So on Point”

Grey Damon is currently guest-starring on The Secret Circle as bad boy Lee LaBeque, a brooding manwitch Faye Chamberlain (Phoebe Tonkin) found — gasp! — online. Faye, determined to show Cassie she’s the baddest witch in Chance Harbor, turns to Lee for help summoning her deepest, darrkest magic. According to Grey, it’s not that hard to fall for Faye — or Phoebe.

Grey tells MTV: “Faye’s just really interesting because she also has a lot of depth to her, adding that his Aussie costar has the same captivating energy. “Even when we’re not working you can see there’s always something going on in her head. Phoebe, she’s always reading and stuff.”

Grey’s praise for Phoebe doesn’t end there. “She’s a bright girl, and as far as a romance goes on-screen, it’s not hard to play that up. She’s very endearing and very likeable. And in real life she’s a sweet, endearing woman. As far as a romance goes, it’s not hard to get there with her. She’s so on point.” (Source)

‘TSC’ E.P. talks fan interaction, dark magic, and romantic entanglements

Working on a supernatural teen drama on The CW, particularly one with a built-in book fanbase and an undeniable link to “The Vampire Diaries,” Miller expected a certain level of fan enthusiasm in social media spheres — but that’s not to say that the level of dedication hasn’t surprised him, particularly when it comes to a few unexpected fan favorites.

“The reaction to Gale Harold wasn’t entirely surprising to me because we all think he’s incredibly great and very sexy, but just how strong and vocal his fan base is was a pleasant surprise. The most surprising aspect of the fan reaction is definitely the Fayana movement,” Miller says, referring, of course, to the fans who want to see Faye (Phoebe Tonkin) and Diana (Shelley Hennig) on screen, together, all the time, whether platonically, romantically, or in rivalry. “I can’t believe creativity that goes into it. We spend inordinate amounts of time poring through the videos. how creative people can be with limited amount of footage. I never cease to be amazed by how creative people can be with limited amounts of footage.”

Yes, Fayana fans — the girls’ friendship will continue to grow more complicated as the season progresses, though not necessarily in the ways you might be hoping for. Where the roles in the circle were defined before Cassie (Britt Robertson) showed up, now that she’s exploring her ability to perform magic outside the circle — she’s throwing a wrench in the mix.

Phoebe Tonkin discusses witches

Categories: Articles & Interviews, The Secret Circle

22 year old Australian actress Phoebe Tonkin is probably best known for her performances as Cleo Sertori in H2O: Just Add Water and Fiona Maxwell in Tomorrow, When the War Began. However, she has recently expanded her fan base by appearing as Faye Chamberlain in the supernatural show The Secret Circle, which airs on The CW. Phoebe has taken time to discuss why she thinks people are becoming more and more fascinated with witches again.

Tonkin explained, “I think it’s the idea that magic is infinite and that there are not many rules, which is what’s cool. There is no end to this, like where vampires can’t go outside in the sun, witches can do anything. I think that’s where the moral dilemma comes in: if we have this incredible power, how far do we take it and do we use it for good or do we use it for bad? Or, do we not use it? There’s always that question.”

The Secret Circle premiered on The CW on Thursday September 15 and was then ordered for a full twenty two episode first season, on October 12, 2011. You can see Phoebe Tonkin portraying Faye Chamberlain, alongside Thomas Dekker as Adam Conant, in The Secret Circle, every Thursday evening on The CW. (Source)

TSC 1.08 – Another Teaser

As seen in the promo, Faye Chamberlain [Phoebe Tonkin] doesn’t react well to a rather steamy dare performed between Cassie and new bad boy Jake Armstrong [Chris Zylka].

“Faye is paranoid that everyone is turning against her. She can see that Cassie is slowly trying to take away everything that’s important to her,” says Phoebe. ”She starts lashing out a little bit, and starts questioning herself and going a little mad.”

For Phoebe, who moments later braved the pounding rain to face Faye’s demons, this episode is her favorite to date.

“The scene we just did was probably my favorite scene so far,” she told Wetpaint Entertainment after shooting their game of truth or dare. “It was very character driven, everyone had a very clear intention and it was really interesting combining being just a normal teenager — drinking and going away for the weekend — [with] the magic element. I think that’s what’s so cool about our show: finding the balance between the magic and just being a normal teenager with normal problems.” (Source)
